Technology

Technology is an integral part of the Catholic School curriculum. We foster excellence by equipping students with the ability to effectively use today’s information, tools, and technologies. Our commitment to life-long learning ensures that students become active, creative, knowledgeable, and ethical participants in our global society.

Technology Usage

Students in Archdiocese of Louisville Catholic Schools are truly 21st-century learners using the latest technologies to frame their learning and cultivate critical and creative problem-solving skills. Covid-19 restrictions accelerated the move to one device per student and the need for students to use devices at home and school for collaborative learning. Teachers have integrated technology at an unprecedented rate to manage the needs of students while supporting a robust curriculum. The innovative use of technology extends learning beyond the classroom. Virtual reality and augmented reality transport students to ancient Rome or to the depths of the ocean allowing them to explore and experience the content more deeply. Other students visualize data by creating models or perform tasks by coding robots. Still others practice fundamental skills through dance and activity using interactive floors. Archdiocese of Louisville students are actively engaged in authentic learning that integrates state-of-the-art technology with the best practices in teaching and learning.

Elementary School Technology

Our elementary school students use Chromebooks, tablets, laptops, and interactive displays daily. Brands and types of technology vary from school to school. Philosophically, however, all schools in the Archdiocese of Louisville agree that using technology increases student learning. Many schools have one-to-one programs. Some schools have moved to a paperless classroom environment where all assignments are submitted electronically. Google Drive, used widely among Archdiocese of Louisville schools, allows students to produce collaborative work such as presentations or to develop class polls in a safe environment.

High School Technology

Technology permeates the high school environment in all Archdiocese of Louisville schools. All secondary schools have one-to-one environments with equipment provided by the school or with equipment brought from home (BYOD) by the students. In these 1:1 environments students have the advantage of ubiquitous access to information in Learning Management Systems as well as on the World Wide Web. Students are positioned to manage data, posit and prove hypotheses, and solve problems with the added advantage of being able to wirelessly share their work with their classmates to demonstrate their thinking. Interactive technologies allow students to take notes and physically manipulate, arrange, and rearrange objects for presentations and discussions. Teachers use the wireless devices to gather student responses to get immediate feedback from students regarding class information. Students utilize one-to-one world language systems as well as design and produce objects using 3D scanning and printing. Robots are key components in coding classes where students learn to analyze problems and solve them by programming the robots.

Visual & Performing Arts

Both art and music are incorporated into the curriculum of Catholic Schools, and many schools offer extracurricular opportunities in the arts. Drama, band, art clubs, and crafts are offered at Catholic Schools, and each year Catholic School students are recognized for their work in local, regional, and national competitions.

Visual Arts

The visual arts curriculum promotes a commitment to lifelong enjoyment and appreciation of all types of creative endeavors. Art encourages inquiry, discovery, and wonder. As art reflects and transmits its time and culture, it is a vital key to understanding the past and to realizing the future. The visual arts curriculum nurtures students’ creativity, increases higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills, makes use of current technology and tools, explores real-world applications, and provides cross-cultural understanding. Visual arts programs encompass a variety of media approaches including fine arts, crafts, art history, multimedia experiences, multicultural expression, aesthetics, and criticism.

Performing Arts

The music and performing arts curricula reflect the reality that all human beings are innately musical regardless of age, talent, or ability level. The study of music and performing arts benefits both students and society, touching human beings in ways that are solely unique to the music and performing arts disciplines. The music and performing arts curricula provide avenues for self-expression, communication, and creativity and reinforces cross-curricular and life-skills training. Music and performing arts address a variety of interests, learning styles, and readiness levels and engage students in lifelong learning processes.

Before & After School Programs

At the Archdiocese of Louisville Catholic Schools, we are here for students after the bell rings. Almost all Catholic elementary schools offer after-school-care programs that are open until 6pm., either through the school or through a third-party vendor such as the YMCA, and some schools provide before-school care. Fees for these services are separate from tuition. Many of these programs are offered for the school year only, but some extend to care during the summer.

Visit our Catholic Schools listing for more information regarding before and after-school program offerings.
